Neil Gaiman: Newbery award and movie news
Bestselling fantasy author and comics writer Neil Gaiman has won the prestigious Newbery award for his recent children’s dark fantasy novel The Graveyard Book. The book, about a little boy raised by a witch, a werewolf and a vampire, originally started out as one of his first writing projects many years ago, but was only recently completed.
It has certainly captured the imaginations of many people, and the author, also known for books such as American Gods, Coreline, Stardust and the Sandman comics from DC Vertigo, is delighted and humbled by his win. The John Newbery medal is one of the top honours that an author can receive, and it is a further testament to Gaiman’s prowess as a writer that he is adored by so many people of such a wide age range.
In related news, it has been revealed that Neil Jordan, director of Interview With The Vampire, The Crying Game and The Company of Wolves amongst many others, is to helm the film adaptation. Jordan’s flair for strange visuals suits the work of Gaiman down to the ground, and this should be a very interesting partnership indeed. Few other details on the movie of The Graveyard Book are available at present.
Other films involving Gaiman’s work thus far have included Stardust, the forthcoming Coreline and the original screenplay Mirrormask. A new adaptation of his seminal novel Neverwhere is also on the way.
