There is a large selection of accessories and Predators costumes for Halloween so that, added to your own creativity, you’re sure to stun and frighten the crowds.

A young newcomer called John Spaihts is penning the script now. Spaihts is about to become a big name in Hollywood screenwriting, thanks to some high profile projects on the way, such as the Keanu Reeves vehicle ‘Passenger’.

The big deal though is Scott himself. Ridley Scott hasn’t directed an Alien movie since the first one in 1979, and it will be incredible to see him bring his signature style back to a franchise that many had left for dead thanks to the mediocre Alien: Resurrection and the fun but brainless Alien Vs Predator movies.

So, with a new Ridley Scott directed Alien movie and the new PREDATORS movie from Robert Rodriguez, it looks like these ailing franchises are about to get just the kick that they need to come back stronger.

One of the most asked-about items of movie memorabilia is the Aliens Power Loader, that iconic yellow machine from ALIENS, which Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley character climbs into to go into hand-to-claw combat with the Alien Queen herself. The machine was ugly and clompy, which helped it become such an iconic thing, as it looked so real and functional. Now with the Aliens Power Loader Diorama it looks like there will finally be a collectible that does the power loader justice.

Models of the Power Loader, when they’ve been available, have been some of the most sought after pieces of Aliens collectibles around, and I can’t say I’m surprised. I love the Power Loader, and so do millions of other film fans. Thanks to Sideshow, there will be a bunch of very happy fans when the piece starts shipping. With the news that Robert Rodriguez is to reboot the Predator movie franchise (God I’m sick of the term ‘Reboot’ now. Remember when it was little more than a cool CG kids’ show?), several questions have been raised. When will the film be set? Will it be canon alongside the first two Predator movies, or will it fit more with the Alien Vs Predator films? Will it actually be any good?

The answer to that last question is: ‘Probably’. This is Robert Rodriguez we’re talking about here. The man certainly knows his action and his genre staples, so I think the franchise is in good hands. I had a horrible feeling that the next one would see Paul WS Anderson in the director’s chair, and I was ready to weep.

Thankfully, there is a proper director at the helm this time around, and I think that this is one instance of a series being rebooted (Gah) that will work out pretty well. Hopefully the script will be good. Rodriguez did write a script entitled PREDATORS a few years ago, so it will be interesting to see how much of that draft winds up in the finished product. After losing all hope that the Predator movie franchise could be redeemed, it looks a lot more promising now.

GHOST RIDER 2
A sequel to Ghost Rider is moving forward and is due to go into production in the coming months. While the first film wasn’t exactly a huge hit at the box office, it did well enough on DVD to warrant a sequel. The new film will again star Nicholas Cage as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider.

THING PREQUEL
The remake/prequel to John Carpenter’s version of THE THING is heading into production soon too. The film, which takes elements of the original version, Carpenter’s version and new prequel material, is set to start off a series of THING movies for a new generation.

RESIDENT EVIL 4
Sony are developing a fourth entry in the RESIDENT EVIL movie series. The project already has a script, written by Resident Evil veteran Paul WS Anderson, but that’s about all there is in the way of details so far, other than it will apparently take place in Alaska.No word yet on whether Milla Jovovich will be involved.

PREDATOR REBOOT
The trend of remaking everything in sight continues with the news that the PREDATOR movie series is to start over again with a proposed remake of the 1987 movie that saw Arnold Schwarzenegger face off against the ruthless hunter alien. This will apparently not get in the way of the next Alien Vs Predator film, which is said to be entitled ALIEN Vs PREDATOR: DARK FORTRESS and take place on a derelict prison ship.

UNICRON RETURNS!
The eater of worlds is back! Well, sort of. Hasbro are apparently to bring back one of their most popular items of recent years- the oversized UNICRON figure. The character, first seen in the 1980s Transformers animated movie, is set to make a comeback in the last form we saw him in. The Transformers Universe edition of Unicron doesn’t have a release over her yet, but we’ll be keeping ‘em peeled.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE- UM, WHERE IS IT?
Word has now been floated that the much-anticipated feature film version of Where The Wild Things has actually been removed from WB’s schedules. What? This production has had some serious trouble thrown at it, and it is starting to look like we’ll never see max and the Wild Things hit the screen at this rate. Spike Jonze had mad what appeared to be (from early tests and leaked footage) a remarkably faithful and moving adaptation of the famed children’s book, and then by all accounts the studios stuck their noses in. The theory is that WB want it to be more kiddie friendly. Have they even read the damn book?

DOCTOR WHO- What the?!
After the breathtaking cliffhanger to Doctor Who episode 12, ‘The Stolen Earth’, speculation has gone into overdrive as to the events of the final episode, to be screened this coming Saturday. Has the Doctor actually regenerated? Is this the rumoured botched regeneration? Will he split into two Doctors? The fans are going insane, and tomorrow will see our full writeup of that episode in our weekly TARDISWATCH feature. Is the end nigh?

FRIDAY THE 13TH: JASON WILL WEAR HOOD *AND* MASK
Platinum Dunes have gone on record to say that Jason Voorhees will wear both the sack hood and the Hockey mask in the upcoming remake of FRIDAY THE 13TH. This is cool, as it will shut geeks like me up from complaining the he’s not supposed to get the mask until the third film.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: BLACK AND WHITE FIGURES ON THE WAY
Black and white editions of the recent Ninja Turtles figures will be released soon, featuring an alternate paint job that returns them to their black and white roots as an indie comic. The figures already looked cool in the first place, but these TMNT noir ‘series 1.5’ figures look even better. They should be available in July. Check these out:

 

LABYRINTH: JARETH AND HOGGLE SET COMING!

An action figure double pack containing Jareth the Goblin King and Hoggle from the legendary 80s masterpiece LABYRINTH will soon be available from NECA. Due to be part of their Cult Classics range, the figure looks set to be another huge hit with fans of that seminal movie.

HALO 3 FIGURES- SERIES ONE

Yeah, they arrived at long last, and have flown off the shelves in suitably heroic fashion. These figures, while smaller than those made for previous Halo games, are fantastically detailed and a marvellous addition to your Spartan army. Naturally, the Master Chief figure has been the biggest hit (don’t forget there’s a 12 inch version on the way later this year), and the whole range of Halo 3 action figures is attracting a lot of attention from gamers and action figure fans alike. Supplied in clamshell packaging and with all the relevant accessories, these are a long-awaited must have series.

ALIENS VS PREDATOR: REQUIEM- THE PREDATOR FIGURES ARE HERE!

Something we’ve had to answer literally hundreds of questions about is the range of Predator figures from NECA’s selection of AVP:R movie figures. Released on the 4th of February in the US, they took their sweet time getting over to these shores, but now they’re here they are being snapped up almost as fast as we can get them in. There’s masked and unmasked versions of the AVPR Predator figures available, in the same clamshell packaging as the Alien Warrior and Predalien Hybrid figures that came out around last Christmas. These figures are superbly made, even if their facial features show a slightly different colour palette to any Predators onscreen, or indeed any previous figures.

HELLBOY ANIMATED FIGURES

A curious addition to our recent stock has been this trio of Hellboy figures- two of which are in a fantastic animated style in keeping with his recent DVD adventures. The third depicts Hellboy as he was portrayed in the feature film (and forthcoming sequel) by Ron Perlman. Both
Hellboy figures and the Abe Sapein figure are supplied in individual clamshell packages and look fantastic.

McFARLANE DRAGONS: THE EIGHTH WONDER OF ACTION FIGURES

The long awaited eighth set of the phenomenonally popular McFarlane’s Dragons action figures are here, and they are carrying on the range in fine style. Again they are on a smaller scale to the earlier monstrosities (however they do still stretch to 8 inches tall once assembled and out of the packaging), but they are every bit as impressive. This is apparently to be the final set of Dragons from the company, so fans are urged to complete their collections quickly. This set carries the title McFarlanes Dragons: The Rise of Man, and follows the era between the time of the Dragons and their descent into myth. A fitting climax to a superb range.

Well there you have it folks, the third in the equally loved and maligned Alien Vs Predator series is on the way, as let slip by a nameless Fox employee. Granted, this isn’t that surprising really, but it is still cool to know that the thing is coming, and not only that, but there has now been confirmation that the third film will be taking place in the airless battleground of space. Here’s hoping there’s a nice fat derelict spacecraft in there, and some marines. Yeah, the movie needs some old-school marines like the classic bunch from ALIENS.

Personally I’d love an ACTUAL Alien Vs Predator movie with no humans in it at all. Think about it. The two creatures are enough of a draw themselves, so why not cut out everyone’s complaints about the human characters of these films and eradicate them completely? Not only would it give audiences something completely new and exciting to see, it would also give the makers a real opportunity to be creative in terms of structure and storytelling.

It needn’t be a constant FX fest either. Looks at the first films in each respective franchise. Those movies were based around tension and moments of “Did I actually see that?” So, why not give us 90 minutes of actual scares and tension, mixed with some asskicking set pieces that would give the series back a chunk of the credibility it lost with the last two films. Give it some thought Fox, please!
