WELCOME TO 2009: The movies and merchandise to look out for this year!

Happy new year one and all! 2009 promises to be a big, brash beast of a year, with some of the most anticipated films and gear around in ages. 2009 is going to be a big year for many geeks, as not only do we have the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen to look forward to, but there’s also the very promising Terminator: Salvation and the hugely anticipated WATCHMEN adaptation on the way too.

Oh yeah, and there’s that little STAR TREK film too…

Doctor Who will be back for another four special episodes in 2009, before David Tennant gives up the TARDIS keys to the 11th Doctor for series 5 in 2010. There’s the remake of FRIDAY THE 13TH too, introducing a whole new generation to the origins of Jason Voorhees. Car fans get the awesome Fast and Furious, the fourth film in the extreme racing series of blockbusters. The third film in the UNDERWORLD series will be taking a bite out of cinemas too, and fans are hopeful that RISE OF THE LYCANS will be as good as the trailer promises.

Classic toy fans will hopefully get the thrill ride they’re hoping for this summer with the release of the first live-action GI JOE movie. Classic horror fans won’t be disappointed though, as there’s the WOLFMAN remake starring Benicio Del Toro, and the first film to be based on Clive Barker’s infamous short story collections, namely BOOK OF BLOOD.

There’s some fantastic new merchandise on the way too, with action figures, collectibles, statues and more from the WATCHMEN movie due in this month, as well as brand new figures in the GEARS OF WAR range coming soon too. The GEARS OF WAR range is going to grow with some fantastic figures from the huge sequel to the hit game, and they look superb thus far!

Also on the horizon there’s merchandise from the aforementioned Transformers sequel, the fun old-school Monster Scene Kits, and a brand new range of Torchwood figures, just in time for the third series of the SF hit to arrive. FREDDY VS JASON 2 – WILL IT EVER BE MADE?

With remakes of Friday the 13th (completed) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (in preproduction) on the way, we are seeing the rebirth of two of the biggest Horror franchises ever to stalk and slash on our screens. It raises the question as to whether we will see another Freddy Vs Jason crossover movie in years to come. Where the first Freddy Vs Jason did capture the characters of Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees very well, it failed completely to bring us a coherent script or any human characters worth caring about. With this reinvention of both of these iconic characters, it may well be a good time soon to have them meet again.

A second film in the series was rumoured a while ago, which would have involved Ash from the EVIL DEAD films raise a chainsaw to the two terror titans. That would have been awesome, but sadly the project never got past the concept stage.

The new series of Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street films, once they have both got maybe two films out each, would be a great place to put another crossover. It would be nice to see the characters come face to face again without thew baggage of seventeen previous films in total (ten featuring Jason, seven featuring Freddy). So, once these new eras for the horror classics are well underway, how abut a REAL clash of these infamous horror icons, one the true fans won’t be quite so brutal towards.

FRIDAY THE 13TH: REMAKE TRAILER RELEASED

The first actual trailer from the forthcoming remake of FRIDAY THE 13TH has hit the net. How does it look? The trailer is actually surprisingly good, and bodes well for a project that initially seemed doomed to be awful. Jason Voorhees looks even more formidable than his earlier movie incarnations, and the atmosphere seems to be just about right. Here’s hoping this isn’t a fluke and the film is actually as good as this trailer makes it out to be…

Hey all, there’s plenty going on amidst the neon boulevards of Planet Geek, so let’s take a look at some of the cool stuff happening and about to happen…

DOCTOR WHO- What the?!
After the breathtaking cliffhanger to Doctor Who episode 12, ‘The Stolen Earth’, speculation has gone into overdrive as to the events of the final episode, to be screened this coming Saturday. Has the Doctor actually regenerated? Is this the rumoured botched regeneration? Will he split into two Doctors? The fans are going insane, and tomorrow will see our full writeup of that episode in our weekly TARDISWATCH feature. Is the end nigh?

FRIDAY THE 13TH: JASON WILL WEAR HOOD *AND* MASK
Platinum Dunes have gone on record to say that Jason Voorhees will wear both the sack hood and the Hockey mask in the upcoming remake of FRIDAY THE 13TH. This is cool, as it will shut geeks like me up from complaining the he’s not supposed to get the mask until the third film.

ALIEN FIGURES NOW IN
The new ‘Original Movie’ ALIEN figures are now in stock in both 7 and 18 inch versions. The 18 inch version is already available to order! Check out the 18 inch Alien Figure.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: BLACK AND WHITE FIGURES ON THE WAY
Black and white editions of the recent Ninja Turtles figures will be released soon, featuring an alternate paint job that returns them to their black and white roots as an indie comic. The figures already looked cool in the first place, but these TMNT noir ‘series 1.5’ figures look even better. They should be available in July. Check these out:

LABYRINTH: JARETH AND HOGGLE SET COMING!

An action figure double pack containing Jareth the Goblin King and Hoggle from the legendary 80s masterpiece LABYRINTH will soon be available from NECA. Due to be part of their Cult Classics range, the figure looks set to be another huge hit with fans of that seminal movie.

CINEMA OF FEAR 2: FREDDY, JASON AND LEATHERFACE ACTION FIGURES RETURN!

Some recent additions to our action figure wall are really impressing me. Well, three out of the four figures in this new set of CINEMA OF FEAR action figures are anyway. The first set were marvellous things, but they were perhaps a little too stylised for some tastes. The next batch are in the store now, and I’m pleased to find that Mezco have gone for the ‘big three’ in Horror antiheroes, and have produced a set of figures that is rather excellent. The annoying clamshell packages aside (they look great but you do need some form of laser sword to open them), these are some of the best horror themed action figures I’ve seen since the early days of the McFarlane Movie Maniacs range.

The second Cinema of Fear ‘House of Horrors’ set of licensed action figures consists of Freddy Krueger (as he appeared in the original Nightmare On Elm Street movie), Jason Voorhees (as he appeared in Friday the 13th past 6: Jason Lives), and Leatherface (from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2). Also in the set is a figure of Nancy from the first Elm street movie, from the infamous ‘Bath’ scene in which the naked, sleeping Nancy ends up with an underwater attack from Freddy Krueger.That one is the figure I’m not too thrilled with. It looks nice, but there seems to be little point to it. The Freddy figure is great aside from the questionable sculpt of one of his interchangeable hands (the one with sculpted green ‘blood’ coming out of it), and is going to be a popular figure for some time to come. The Jason Voorhees figure captured the character at his most iconic, and is the guise that most people will be familiar with, even if the film it is taken from was pure cheese. The Leatherface action figure is better than the classic McFarlane figure was, in all honesty. It looks superb. All are articulated and come with accessories and movie themed packaging. I’d just like to know what sort of use an action figure of a bath tub would be… Ah well, as horror action figures go, they look fantastic.

FRIDAY THE 13TH REMAKE: TREK STAR TO PLAY JASON’S MOTHER

It has been revealed that the lady set to play Pamela Voorhees in the forthcoming remake/franchise reboot of FRIDAY THE 13TH will be none other than former STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE star Nana Visitor. Nana played the feisty Bajoran character major Kira Nerys in the highly acclaimed spinoff from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and became a firm favourite with fans during the show’s seven year run. She also appeared in the TV series based on the 1988 comedy flick ‘Working Girl’, the Jessica Alba TV show Dark Angel, CSI and even the recent Battlestar Galactica phenomenon.

I love this bit of casting news. Aside from the fact that I had a teenage crush on Nana Visitor when she was in DS9, she is a very powerful onscreen presence and it is going to be very cool indeed seeing her as the psychotic (but oh so loving) mother of Jason Voorhees. The Friday the 13th remake is set to be released on Friday the 13th of February, 2009. It is to be directed by Marcus Nispel from a script by Mark Swift and Damian Shannon.
