spiderman3 SPIDER MAN 4 Release date... and thoughts on the comics industry

Recent news from the merchandise industry states that Marvel has put May 6th 2011 down as the release date for the fourth movie in the blockbuster film franchise. This fits in well with Sam Raimi’s recent statement that he was doing Spider-Man 4 next (and then EVIL DEAD 4 after that), and also with marvel’s recent shuffle of release dates for all of their forthcoming comic book movies apart from Iron man 2, which retains its original release date.

No confirmation as to who else will be returning for the new Spider-ManĀ  film, and to be frank I’d be surprised to see Tobey Maguire again after the dire Spider-man 3 and his well known issues with the role. I’d personally love to see him back, as I thought he was pitch perfect as Peter parker and Spidey, but I can’t realistically see him coming back unless there’s a fat wage packet. With things as they are I can’t imagine wage packets are going to be that fat for a while.

Hmm… .

Incidentally, while I’m on that train of thought I’ll say something about the comics industry. Prices are going up due to exchange rates and the fluctuating economy, so in an attempt to conserve resources and maximize the impact of publisher’s titles, how about the big guns at Marvel and DC stop publishing so many dull series featuring tertiary characters?

The same goes for multiple spin-offs from one title or character or team. Stop flooding the market with weak titles and instead focus on a core of reliable titles to maintain interest and not stretch out your fan’s wallets even further! A market awash with multi-title crossovers and endless miniseries is a market that needs trimming.
