DOCTOR WHO: JUST WHO WILL BE THE ELEVENTH DOCTOR?

As speculation regarding David Tennant’s future as the Tenth Doctor grows (possibly thanks to hacks like me), many fans are wondering who could possible take over from him as the eleventh incarnation of the world’s favourite Time Lord. The idea of the eleventh Doctor got me thinking who I think would be a good candidate for the role, and thus here are some suggestions from a long-term Doctor Who fan (we’re talking twenty years here) as to who might be able to fuiill those iconic converse trainers once the hyperactive Scot hangs up his Sonic Screwdriver. If you have any suggestions of your own, do let us know! You may well disagree wholeheartedly with my choices, but take a look nonetheless…

DYLAN MORAN
Dylan MoranThe much loved Irish actor and comedian has that perfect Doctor-ish quality. He’s capable of being utterly insane onscreen yet his talent allows him a wide scope of emotions. There is something a little Tom Baker-esque about Mr Moran- unpredictable, an edge that says he could explode at any moment. A man with a great presence and a powerful voice, I;d say he would be a great choice for the eleventh Doctor Who. While he is known chiefly for comedy roles such as Bernard in Black Books, I honestly believe he could be an incredible Doctor. Just think of him facing down the Daleks with a wry grin and a well-aimed putdown. Oh yes. Stick him in a frock coat, mess his hair up, and voila. Instant Time Lord.

RICHARD AYOADE
Richard AyoadeThe man most commonly known as spindly nerd Moss in the IT Crowd, or Dean Learner in the Garth Merenghi series, Richard has much more charisma than the comedy roles allow him to show off, and he would be my second choice for the eleventh Doctor. He has youth, looks, intelligence and it would be fantastic to see him take on a meatier role. They don’t come much meatier than Doctor Who, and I do believe a spell as the rogue Time Lord would catapult his career to a massive new level. He certainly has the talent to take on the task. Richard would be a great follow-on to David Tennant- he’s a very different actor with a very different approach, but he would be able to carry on from where the tenth Doctor left off without the transformation jarring too much.

REECE SHEARSMITH
Reece ShearsmithWhile his League of Gentlemen colleagues have already appeared in Doctor Who (Mark Gatiss wrote various episodes and appeared in The Lazarus Experiment, and Styeve Pemberton appeared in series 4’s Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead), Reece is yet to make his presence felt in Time and Space. Why would he be a good Doctor? He has a very, very versatile selection of acting styles, voices, moods, characters, the works. With stage and radio experience he has a very commanding voice and despite his diminutive stature would make a very formidable Doctor. I can imagine him as a mix between Patrick Troughton and Sylvester McCoy, eccentric and excitable, but more than capable of bringing on the drama when needed.

EMILIA FOX
Emilia FoxThe wild card in my choices for the eleventh Doctor would be Emilia Fox as a female incarnation of the Doctor. While it has been stated that a female Doctor probably won’t happen in the series (although it has happened on audio), it would certainly be interesting to see the change in the dynamic of the show. The English actress Emilia Fox would make a great Doctor thanks to her exquisite portrayal of every character she is cast as. Her versatility would be a great asset as the Doctor as the part would give her a massive amount of opportunities to stretch her abilities and bring fans a truly unique portrayal of their hero. Another lady who came to mind as a possible eleventh Doctor is Jessica Hynes, but she’s already been in the show (in Human Nature/The Family of Blood in series 3). Mind you, that didn’t stop Colin Baker…

Whoever takes on the role after David Tennant (whenever that may be), we’ll be on hand to cover the Doctor Who universe every step of the way. Foir now we will look forward to the Christmas special and the 2009 specials, and beyond to series five. Who knows where we’ll be taken next?

I think the smart money is going on Russell Tovey, given that he’s starring as “the next Doctor” in the Christmas Special, which is titled “The Next Doctor” (or something similar, memory fails me). But then, this being Doctor Who, things are rarely that obvious :D

actually it is David Morrissey playing the ‘Next Doctor’ in the Xmas Special, as far as I know. He’s an imposter, possibly in league with the Cybermen. God, that was fun to type ;)
