DOCTOR WHO: IS A MOVIE ON THE WAY?

Tardis Tennant DOCTOR WHO: IS A MOVIE ON THE WAY?There is definitely something happening in the world of the BBC’s Doctor Who. With no full series this next year, fans are eager to find out more about the future of the Time Lord’s adventures. The Christmas Special is coming, as are the 2009 specials, which are also bringing us some fantastic rumours about what and who the Doctor will be facing. The thing is, now there is a strong rumour that ’s tenth Doctor is heading for the big screen. Wishful thinking on the part of fans? Maybe, maybe not. Think about it. We could have the specials in 2009, a full series in 2010, and then a big screen Doctor Who movie, in which the Doctor could fail against a terrifying enemy and regenerate into the eleventh incarnation of the character.

A feature film could even take us into the heart of the Time War, which we’ve heard so much about for so long. A big screen adventure would be able to do the scale of that story justice. Speaking as a big fanboy myself, I’d love to see the eighth and ninth Doctors team up with the tenth to help end the Time War, and a feature film is probably the only way we’ll get to see Christopher Eccleston onscreen as the Doctor again.

But is this all possible in the first place? Would a film be considered? New showrunner Steven Moffatt isn’t ruling out the possibility of a shift to the big screen. With now being shown on both sides of the Atlantic, and bigger than it had ever been in its history, this would be the perfect time to set the wheels in motion for a feature film adventure. As much as I love the 60s Peter Cushing Doctor Who films, I really want to see the last Time Lord up on the big screen, showing the world that science fiction can have a brain and a heart as well as special effects.

Would David Tennant be interested? Probably. Not just from a financial aspect either. Tennant has made it known he wants to do more film work, and a big screen Doctor Who project would help bring him to the attention of many more execs after a good actor. The franchise already has a built in audience who are guaranteed to go and see a cinematic outing, and it would also help bridge the gap between Doctors, as well as bringing in legions of new fans to the show.

Apparently negotiations about Tennant’s future as the Doctor are currently underway, and the story of a possible film has been picked up all over the British media today, so hopefully there will be some concrete news soon! As long as the Doctor Who series keeps running, I’ll be happy, but a film would be a wonderful thing for young and old fans to experience. (Time) Lord(s) knows we have been waiting long enough for a proper, canon Doctor Who film to be made. Could we finally be getting our wish?
