FRIDAY THE 13TH MOVIE REMAKE GETS ITS JASON

The forthcoming remake of FRIDAY THE 13th just got interesting. I’ve been a detractor of the idea of remaking such an iconic moivie since I first heard about it (Don’t get me started on the Elm Street remake, just don’t), but now we have a name for the man that will portray the legendary Jason Voorhees, and that name is Derek Mears. Recently seen in The Hills Have Eyes Part 2, he’s also done stunt work for Pirates of the Caribbean and the forthcoming INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL. This is cool- he is incredibly imposing, experienced and has a mean stare. Looking like a sleeker, more athletic Michael Berryman (guess I see why he ended up in The Hills Have Eyes…), he’s going to look pretty damn fearsome in the old school Jason makeup.

Now what is really interesting is the approach that this remake is taking. Instead of just a retread of that seminal first film, the makers, led by director Marcus Nispel, are taking the most important elements from the first four Friday the 13th films and rolling them into one big kickstart for a new franchise. This is a great idea. Many people wouldn’t really get the first film now, as when they think of Friday the 13th, they think of Jason in the hockey mask. Incorporating stuff from later films is a stroke of something approaching genius, and all of a sudden I’m actually curious as to how this project will turn out…
