SPIDER-MAN 4 AND 5 FAST TRACKED- WITH THE ORIGINAL CAST?
Reports from Tinseltown are saying that Sony are fast-tracking the fourth and fifth entries in the Spider-Man franchise to go into production as soon as possible. We knew Spider-Man 4 and 5 were to be made, but the surprise is that they may well be made by Sam Raimi and feature Tobey MacGuire in the title role again, just as the first three films were.
Previous reports stated that a whole new cast would be assembled for these two films, which were at one point to be a semi-reboot o the series after the disappointing performance of Spider-Man 3 (which, despite fans finding problems with its story and structure, was still enormously popular at the box office).
The only two names that have been raised for these films is Sam and Tobey themselves- there is currently no word on whether Kirsten Dunst would be returning as Mary jane, or indeed any of the other cast members from the first three films. The big question though is the villain of the piece. Would we be getting a proper outing for Venom? Scorpion? The Lizard? Rhino? Kingpin? What?
We’ve had all of the main villains now, aside from maybe Kraven, so what would the films be about? Personally my money is on some version of the Carnage saga, allowing for the return of Venom alongside his demented offspring. Maximum Carnage anyone?
Some fans are concerned that fast tracking the films to keep hold of the cast while Tobey is young enough would mean a dip in quality. Honestly I think the films are in safe hands. Spider-Man is such a huge property in Hollywood now that it would be foolish. Here’s hoping the films are a return to the perfection of Spider-Man 2.
