STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN LI – Not Looking Promising

Okay, the trailer for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li has been around for a while, and the movie opens in the US this week I believe, but the more I see of the film, the less I like it. It’s getting hard to be enthusiastic about a video games movie that doesn’t resemble the Street Fighter video game all that much.
Maybe fans will flock to see Kristen Kreuk doing lots of wire work, but I’d rather have a full-blown Streetfighter movie instead of this, which looks ever more like a TV pilot.
You never see Chun Li in the actual outfit (The closest you get is seeing her in a blue dress and the hair buns in a club scene which degenerates into a cheap looking fight scene), there are few characters from the Street Fighter games, and the whole thing appears to be a build up to the last scene, which is a huge, blatant set-up for the next film.
Why a proper Streetfighter movie couldn’t have been made in the first place escapes me. I know some people still remember that godawful 90s version, but still, why focus on one character instead of going the whole hog (or indeed, Bison)? It doesn’t make sense to me, not with this franchise.
I did get excited upon hearing about the film going into production, but it looks like the outcome is doomed to the bargain bins. I hope I’m wrong, and that this isn’t just a huge missed opportunity. Can’t say I’m really holding my breath though. I look forward to bringing you a review.
