THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE IT WON’T SUCK

x files uk poster THE X FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE IT WON’T SUCKAfter several years away from our screens, the returns to the UK with the British release of The X-Files: I Want To Believe in cinemas from the 1st of August. The reviews have been pouring in from across the pond, and they are all saying pretty much the same thing. This new movie is a gigantic missed opportunity that goes precisely nowhere. I will reserve judgement on that until I’ve seen it, but the worry is growing that these reviews aren’t lying and this is going to have been a mistake. I’ve been rooting for this film ever since I heard it was on the way, but with each successive review I see that says it is a cheap, rushed, pointless film that would have been much better as a TV movie, my anticipation fades.

Fans wanted a big, thumping great supernatural story like the classics the X-Files was capable of in the early-to-mid seasons. It appears that what we have been given is a 90 minute afterthought that pleases nobody and enrages many. AICN let out the last shot in the film, and I swear it is the most ridiculous thing possible to leave as our final shot of these characters.

It has been said that this relatively cheaply made (by Hollywood standards) film is a test to see of the fanbase is still there, to enable a third, full on alien invasion/conspiracy movie to be made with an aim to release it in 2012. That is, of course, when the alien invasion Mulder discovered is set to take place. Unfortunately, from the look of things, we won’t get that luxury as this film may well kill the franchise even moreso than season 9 did. I look forward to seeing the movie and bringing you my review.
