Warner Bros Makes their archive available- Will other studios follow?
This is a great idea. Warner Bros have unveiled the Warner Archive, a service which allows film fans to order custom made DVDs of classic films (and not-so-classic films) that are currently available. I think this is a fantastic concept, and one that could prove lucrative for other studios with a similar back catalogue of productions that are impossible to find.
While WB’s selection in mainly older, more obscure films, I think that the concept of custom DVDs is something that has a ton of potential. Think about it- they don’t need to be mass produced, they don’t need to be stored, they don’t need to use tons of resources and they offer film lovers classic movie titles they would otherwise be unable to get hold of.
This has great promise for the future- being able to buy custom DVDs of whatever you want would help cut waste and cost right across the board while still offering a huge range of titles. So then, who is going to take the lead and offer a similar service over here?
