WOLVERINE: On that whole leak controversy

AICN’s decision to put out a story informing the world that the Wolverine movie has been leaked has caused some controversy this past week, and understandably so, but some people seem to be missing the point. Yes, it brought the leak to many peoples’ attention, but if the movie was already out there, it was going to be found by piracy addicts anyway. It is a sad fact, but true.
I can understand why the story was put out though, and must commend AICN for their anti-piracy standpoint. It is impossible to deny that piracy has harmed the film and music industries. The music industry has been hit hardest, and is pretty mangled from the whole mp3 business, while movie industry still has the draw of big screens and cinema quality sound systems to draw people in somewhat.
The leaked version of the Wolverine movie is, as stated, 4 or 5 months old, is missing 20 minutes of new material and is also missing finished effects and score. It is a work print, and as such should not be judged as the finished product. Remember, Fox had issues with the movie and went to great lengths to get everyone back on board for two weeks of new filing at a cost of millions of dollars. Effort has been made to make this film as good as possible for the very people that have been stealing it online.
As much as you want to check these things out, piracy isn’t the way to do it. A film the size of Wolverine should be seen in a cinema, not on a monitor, and should be taken on its merits as a finished piece of work, not a half-done work print.
Come on people, whatever happened to waiting a while and getting excited for something? We’ll be waiting for it to hit the screen in its completed form.
