PREACHER SERIES ABORTED BY HBO

preacher alamo 01 PREACHER SERIES ABORTED BY HBOWhat? WHAT?! WHY?!!! Come on, HBO are hardly the most family friendly outlet, so how come they could possibly be worried about the content of a show? The Preacher graphic novels are confrontational, controversial and excellent, but then, doesn’t that fit in exactly with BO’s output? Could it be they have finally chickened out of something dangerous? This is insane. Fans have been desperate to hear more about this project ever since it was announced after the movie version was aborted, and everyone was getting ready for something fantastic thanks to the promise that the show would cover one volume per series. The nine-volume Preacher graphic novel series is one of the most popular comics properties of all time, and alongside Sandman, pretty much keeps the imprint in business.

This news has been around for a few days, but I’ve been seething about it too much to write anything coherent on the matter. A Preacher TV series would have been incredible, and now all I can see is some Hollywood idiot picking it up and making a half-arsed movie adaptation along the lines of Constantine (PTOOEY!).

The franchise has a built in audience already- don’t HBO have any idea of how successful those books are? How respected? How revered? Bringing Preacher to TV is a no brainer and a surefire hit, so why the U turn? Well, it might be down to Heer Starr, or Arseface, or any of the other characters. Actually. I guess, for now at least, Preacher remains the domain of the comics fan.
