GHOSTBUSTERS 3: FINALLY SOME PROGRESS?
The movie sites are currently buzzing with the apparent news of a script for GHOSTBUSTERS 3 being written by two popular scribes. Hold your horses folks, this is just a script, and despite the studios keeping mum about the whole thing, there’s a long way to go before it gets made. There is renewed interest in the franchise thanks to the success of the recent video game version, and thus is was inevitable that GB3 rumours would start flying around again.
I love Ghostbusters. Even the sequel, and the cartoon series. Those are the defining films and TV of my childhood, bar none. I can still recite both films word for word. I know them off by heart, and the news of a possible third film, while awesome, does also raise some concerns. Mainly I’m worried whether or not a new film would retain the spirit and the humour of the first two. The cast are all twenty years older, this is a very different world to that of 1989 and the entire movie industry has been transformed. IF the characters could be brought back with a compelling situation and a great script (and preferably Ivan Reitman in the director’s chair), then it’ll be cool. Otherwise I fear this may be a big mistake now, much as that pains me to say.
I would genuinely love to see another Ghostbusters movie come out, but I’m worried that it may become just a circus of product placement and weak oneliners, like so many big movies of late. If the original cast are willing to come back, then that’s a start. Until I hear something more about this I remain sceptical that I’ll work. I mean, wasn’t a draft of GB3 by Ramis and Aykroyd being shopped around a few years ago? I remember the plot centred around the old Ghostbusters training up the next generation of spook hunters, and once upon a time was rumoured to be starring Owen Wilson, Will Smith and Jack Black as the new Ghostbusters.
One thing I’d love to see in a new Ghostbusters movie would be the fulfilment of the original story. I don’t mean the one that ended up being made as the first film- I mean the *actual* original story, which was going to have John Candy and John Belushi in it, and have the Ghostbusters fighting against the Gozer entity across several other dimensions. What I wouldn’t like to see is the characters come back as a shadow of their former selves. Then again, if Bill Murray just shows up on set and plays himself everything will be fine.
We will be following the development of this project very closely indeed.
