LIFE IN THE GEEK LANE: THIS IS OUR WORLD NOW. YOU ONLY LIVE ON IT.
You will kneel before your geek masters! After lifetimes of being bullied, harangued, belittled, mocked and otherwise bothered by society, the geeks have now taken over. Don’t agree? Ipods, iPhones, netbooks, comic book movies, Twitter, facebook, new media, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who and a million other things occupy the lives of millions of people all over the globe. These are things that have all originated from the very people that have been the butt of so many jokes. The new generation of media, entertainment and interaction has been brought about by the nerdy kid you made fun of at school. remember us? Here we are, and this is our world now.
You know what? We damn well earned it. After everything we’ve been through, people like us still found time to create things that you now can’t live without.
Anyway, we aren’t here just to gloat about the achievements of our peers. We’re here to look a little deeper at the geek lifestyle and all that it entails. This is LIFE IN THE GEEK LANE, and we will be covering the aspects of the geek life that matter, be it comics, Tweets, movies, clothes, books, games, pizza, caffeine or whatever. The geek way of life is no longer relegated to the designation of Guilty Pleasures. This is a real way of life, and one that is hugely fulfilling for a great many people.
I love the lifestyle. My world is full of comics, heroes, villains, movies, music, socializing (online and IRL. Geeks socialize damn well, thanks), and it is all the richer for it.
As with any cultural aspects that get mocked by the masses at first, it takes over and becomes the norm. Thankfully, the geek way of life is something that is gleefully odd, and can’t really ever be seen as a dull way of life at all. Hell, we’re having a blast with what we love and what we follow, and why not? Life is to be enjoyed. We just have more gadgets now to help us do that.
But what does the geek lifestyle entail? Really, it can be just about anything. Everyone has something they are passionate about, fascinated by, addicted to, be it a hobby, a creator, a kind of car, a particular computer, a breed of animal, but it is usually comics, movies and internet culture that are most commonly shoved under the geek label. Nothing wrong with that, but the term isn’t exclusively ours. I acknowledge that, but I stand by what I said. This is our world now.
