MATT SMITH: Five years in the TARDIS?

The contract for Matt Smith to play the eleventh Doctor apparently has the actor signed up for three years, ‘with an optional further two’, according to BBC sources. While many sites are going on about the amount of money Smith is to be paid for his role as the eleventh Doctor Who lead actor, we’re not going to do that. Why? We don’t really care. As long as the scripts and the production values are great, what should an actor’s wage packet matter?
We have Steven Moffat at the helm of the next series of Doctor Who, we have a hot young actor in the lead role, and we have several years of new adventures to look forward to. This preoccupation with pay is getting in the way of the real issues: Who will be the new companion? Will the rumours of the redesigend TARDIS be true? How long will it be before Captain Jack snogs this incarnation of the Doctor too? That sort of thing.
What is great about this piece of news is that it shows the BBC’s faith in Matt Smith to bring us a fantastic 11th Doctor, and if the BBC and Moffat are happy, then so should the fans be.
Best of luck to you, Mr Smith!
