Rosario Dawson- She’s come a long way from KIDS
It’s cool to see that Rosario Dawson, an actress who is not of the typical Hollywood star mould, doing so well. Much is being made of her role in Seven Pounds, which is gaining her all kinds of accolades, but there are geeks like us that will never forget that she has played some roles that are very special to the nerdcentric amongst us.
I’m writing this for the simple reason that Kevin Smith’s Clerks 2 meant a whole lot to me. That film is very much like some weird chronicle of my life. Yeah, I’m basically a Clerk. I identify with Dante more than Randall, but Dawson’s character of Becky really hit home- she brought an earthy, real quality to the character that made parts of that film feel more like a fly-on-the-wall documentary more than a movie.
Many fans will remember her playing Gail in the first Sin City movie, and not just for her acting chops! There was a character that was hard to forget, and certainly a high point of that film. Dawson throws herself into parts to such an extent that she really does stop being just a person reciting a bunch of lines, and it is marvellous that such a different actress is getting the recognition she deserves.
Sure, there are some films she’s done that are a bit less than noteworthy (Josie and the Pussycats, Rent, The Adventures of Pluto Nash *ack*, it hurt to type that title), but that’s the case for anyone paying their dues until the real stuff comes along. Yeah, she’s come a long way since the infamous KIDS, hasn’t she?
