Y’know, the upcoming movie of classic anime series SPEED RACER looks absolutely fantastic. The insane visual style that the film is being put together with creates a nicely self contained universe for the action to take place in, the stars look great, the cars too. What I’m curious about is how the movie is going to be marketed, and indeed perform, in countries other than North America. Granted, it’ll do well in Japan (or will it? I have a sneaking feeling that SPEED RACER and the forthcoming DRAGONBALL movies will get panned in Japan due to the liberties taken in translating these classic franchises into American properties), but on the whole there ain’t that much of a SPEED RACER audience out there.
I’d love it to do well everywhere as I’m all for genre movies doing well, but I’m not sure how it’s going to come across. Are the powers that be going to put it out as a kids movie or a geek flick? I’m hoping somewhere in between. Despite the dayglo visuals, the film is going to have some darker and more adult elements in the mix, and I do think it would do better to be marketed as something of a geek event as opposed to a kids-only film, which is my fear regarding its UK campaign. We shall see.
